The Law Cafe (2022) - Series Review: "Funny and Comforting"

Hello Chingus!

I will be reviewing or will be sharing my thoughts on the drama series of Lee Seung-Gi and Lee Se-Young entitled "Law Cafe". Before I begin, I'd like to warn you that this review will primarily focus on my personal opinions and thoughts, and as a result, we may hold opposing views on this drama. Furthermore, if you haven't started watching this drama yet, this review may contain spoilers because I tend to overshare at times, especially when discussing specific scenes that capture my heart or the likes.

The Law Cafe premiered on September 5, 2022 and ended on October 25, 2022. The show aired on KBS2 every Monday and Tuesday. It tells the story of two people who have known each other for nearly half their lives. Lee Seung-Gi's character, Kim Jung-Ho, is a highly intelligent man who can memorize anything he reads. He works as a prosecutor but quits after discovering the corruption of his father, who is also a prosecutor. He had been unemployed since then. Kim Yoo-Ri, played by Lee Se-Young, was a beautiful, intelligent, and just woman. She used to be a lawyer in a well-known law firm, but one day she decided to quit her job and open a cafe called "Law Cafe," where she serves coffee and legal advice to customers. She decided to open her cafe in the building owned by Jung-Ho.

Because I haven't read the novel, this review will not be a comparison of the novel and the drama adaptation. This review will reflect my personal thoughts and feelings about the drama. This drama really caught my attention during the first episode when I noticed that the main leads were Lee Seung-Gi and Lee Se-Young. They previously worked together on the series "A Korean Odyssey," which I remembered watching after the sixth episode. I had the impression that I had seen them together before on a small screen, and it reminded me of the aforementioned series, in which Se-Young played a zombie-infected girl. Who would have thought they'd work together again, with Se-Young as Seung-Gi's main leading lady this time?
After watching the entire series, I'm at a loss for words to describe it. Because it wasn't a gripping legal drama or a suspenseful thriller that made you think a lot. Though not as exciting as others, this drama has its own appeal and charm. It was both funny and comforting. I actually find it funny, particularly the Law Cafe staff. The combination of the staff and the neighborhood adds to the amusement. It's comforting because the cases they're tackling aren't as big as murder or serial killings, but rather cases that viewers have encountered or may encounter. It gives you an idea of the minor cases that are relevant to everyone. I enjoy dramas about serial killers and cases that take 10 episodes to resolve, but this one isn't like that. Despite the fact that they have dealt with a large number of cases, I find it fascinating to watch. Because of the realistic and heartwarming approach, they take to each issue, I can say that this series is comforting.
Others may argue that this was Seung-Gi's worst drama. Perhaps they have seen all of his drama. But I can assure you that it isn't that bad at all. It has its own power, as I've stated. However, when compared to Seun-Gi's previous dramas, I still prefer My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, A Korean Odyssey, and Mouse. The people in the Law Cafe and the Eunha Building were my favorites in this drama. They definitely set the tone. I also like how the characters were interviewed, which gives you a more in-depth look at their feelings, thoughts, and emotions.

I'd also like to point out that the poster makes the actors unrecognizable. I can't say it was because of the editing, but the angle could have played a role. If I hadn't seen the first episode, I couldn't tell if the man in the picture was Seung-Gi or not.

Would I recommend it? If you want a drama about the law that isn't too stressful to watch but instead gives you relaxation and justice, I think this one is for you. Though it does not address a serious issue, they were able to select timely and relevant issues and give justice to them, ranging from child abuse to divorce. Personally, I would recommend it, but I believe that not everyone will feel the same way. Not because it was bad, but because we have different tastes.

Chingu, have you seen this drama? I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on this one.
