What Comes After Love tells the story of Jungo, a Japanese man, and Hong, a Korean woman. Hong travels to Japan to find herself and figure out what she truly wants in life. While in Japan, she meets Jungo. Both are literature students, and they work hard to support themselves while continuing their studies. Eventually, they even end up living together under the same roof.
However, due to misunderstandings, their relationship falls apart, and Hong decides to return to Korea. Five years later, they cross paths again, with Jungo now a writer and Hong working as an interpreter. This reunion happens when Jungo visits Korea to promote his book, What Comes After Love.
The core of the story is compelling, but since it's a melodrama, the pacing is slow, which isn't really my preference. It took me several days to finish it because of this. That said, it was still a good story, and I appreciate that it was a short series with only six episodes.
I believe the story could have been condensed into just two or four episodes. The pacing was drawn out, and much of the content felt repetitive. The narrative often cycled through the same pattern: they would try to talk, but things wouldn't go well; they would attempt reconciliation, only to say goodbye again. Ultimately, though, they end up together, and the story shows the enduring power of love.
I can't say it was a bad series, but it wasn’t really my style. The way it was handled and presented didn’t resonate with me personally. However, I still recognize its value, and for that reason, I would rate it 3 out of 5. While it’s a sad story, I didn’t feel the sadness as much as I felt boredom due to the slow pacing.
