Seoul Busters (2024) - Series Review "Light but good"

Seoul Busters follows the journey of the Songwon Violent Crime Team 2, a squad infamous for their low arrest rates and repeated blunders during stakeouts and operations. Due to their poor performance, a new chief is appointed to lead them—Dongbang Yoobin, portrayed by Kim Dongwook. Yoobin has no field experience, as his expertise lies in profiling. However, driven by a personal mission to catch his girlfriend's killer, he steps out of his comfort zone.

Yoobin’s entry brings an unexpected spark to the team. Though adjusting isn’t easy, he gradually gains the acceptance of his team members: Mu Joong-ryeok (Park Ji-Hwan), Jung Jung-hwan (Seo Hyun-woo), Seo Min-seo (Park Se-wan), and Jang Tan-sik (Lee Seung-woo). This series balances comedy with serious moments, which is one of its strengths. The cases are engaging, and the show weaves elements of joy, drama, and thriller, compelling viewers to think along with each episode. Although the pacing is slow, it’s deliberate, as the series aims for viewers to savor every detail.

In the later episodes, the cases lose some momentum, and it feels as though they’re stretched to reach a 20-episode count. Still, the ending has impact, especially the final two episodes, which left a strong impression for mystery enthusiasts like me.

Though this isn’t Kim Dongwook’s best series (I still prefer The Guest where his aura fit the darker tone), he delivered a fair performance here, despite some struggle with the comedic elements. Fortunately, his character’s serious nature was played up for humor, which worked well.

The team’s chemistry is another highlight. I wasn’t initially familiar with the cast, but they excelled in their roles. Each character shone, thanks to the writing that allowed each member’s story and talent to be highlighted. They weren’t just supporting characters—they each had their own time to shine.

While this isn’t the most intense or groundbreaking plot, it’s enjoyable for what it is. With a more serious approach, it could have had a stronger impact, but the light tone made it feel more simple and relatable. The core story is good, even if the series as a whole feels somewhat average.

Overall, I’d rate this series a 3.5 out of 5 for its charm and appeal.
