Twinkling Watermelon (2023) - Series Review: "Refreshing and Fantastic Drama"

Twinkling Watermelon revolves around the story of Ha Eun-Gyeol played by Ryeo-Un. He has an hearing impaired parents and brother. He is a brilliant student and at the same time loves to play his guitar in his band at night. His parent didn't know about his passion at music and when his father saw him they had an argument and he said things he shouldn't said. After the fight, he then saw an instrument store and decided to sell his guitar. When he left the store he realized that he travel to time and found himself in the year 1995. There he saw his younger father and shocked that his father can hear during that time.

Main Characters and Their Previous Works I'd watched.

The main cast of this series was someone I was able to saw also in the previous drama they are in. For Ryeo-Un, I recently finished his drama entitled "Secret Romantic Guesthouse" which my review will be posted soon since it was still in my notepad. But he really did great there and his presence also in the series "Through the Darkness" is remarkable for me.

For Choi Hyun-Wook, I appreciated him the most in the Weak Hero Class 1. He is the type of actor that doesn't need to be in a love team but more on friendship-themed drama, he perfectly fit on that. For Seol In-A, I haven't seen the drama where she is the main lead but I am fortunate enough to be familiar with her because of some of the drama he belong in such as "Mr. Queen" same with Shin Eun-Soo for "Bloody Heart".

Director and Writer and their Previous works.

Unfortunately for the Director and Writer's previous work, I haven't seen them but heard some of them. The director of this drama is Song Jung-Hyun who also directed the 2022 drama Mental Coach Jegal and Jin Soo-Wan who also wrote the 2015 drama Kill Me, Heal Me.

Story

The story was really fantastic, it was something that everyone should know. It reminded me of the things we just say because of what we currently see but not because we know what they been through in the past. It has a lot of lesson that we can learn to. I also get the point that not because we feel some people are burden to us is that they also want to be a burden to us. How it started and ended was superb and it was really the highlight of this series. While the in between is fair enough to make the story more fun, cute and refreshing.

Acting

Acting are cute but for the most important part such as the quarrel between Yi-Chan (old) and Eun-Gyeol was really heartbreaking as well as the farewell of Yi-Chan (young) and Eun-Gyeol. It really made me cry the moment Yi-Chan asks what will happen to him in the future or will he be able to go to college, play music or even if he can hear again. Those scenes I've mentioned was good because they delivered the scene perfectly. Their emotions are on point that it made me cry.

Favorite Character on this Series

My favorite character on this series is no other than Ha Yi-Chan (young). Let me just clarify that one that it was the young version of Yi-Chan because we all know that as we mature our character will mature as well. But the innocent and funny side of Yi-Chan (young) is the most refreshing one. At first he is kind of irritating because he always talk about Se-Gyeong but as the story progresses and he became de-focus to Se-Gyeong he started to care more of the people around him, to Eun-Gyeol and Sung-A. His sincerest care when Eun-Gyeol became unreachable and when he knew about the treatment Sung-A experienced, his expressions those moments are really the expressions we wanted to see from a friend. He is indeed a good friend.

Favorite Actor/Actress on this Series

Choi Hyun-Wook who played the role of the young Ha Yi-Chan will be my favorite actor on this series. Well, I would be bias on this part, I still remember him in Weak Hero Class 1 and because he also did great in making me cry on this series I would really give him this. Bias or not, he really did great, would you agree?

Favorite Couple/Tandem on this Series

The bond of Yi-Chan (young) and Eun-Gyeol was really the most admirable amongst all even among the love team they had. How would they really care for each other until the end was something I would cherish the most. Thank you for making Twinkling Watermelon, twinkle more.

Rating: 9/10

The first few episodes really did hit me and made me want to continue and wait for more. There is also this weeks before the ending that made me stop waiting (not totally) but when I saw the trailer for last two episodes it made me wanted to finish it on time and luckily it didn't disappoint me. It was a great ending and a heartwarming scene before the ending is what I really needed.
